From Drywall Dust to Divine Calling: My Journey in Construction and Beyond

My upbringing was steeped in the world of drywall finishing. For two decades, my parents honed their craft, and by the summer of 1984, at just 13 years old, I joined them on job sites instead of enjoying typical summer breaks. I began with fundamental tasks: mixing joint compound (or "mud" as we called it) and patching oversized holes left by hangers. This was my introduction to drywall knife control – mastering the delicate balance of pressure and precision with a 6-inch knife to properly spot nails. Over the next five years, I immersed myself in every facet of drywall, from hanging and finishing to texturing. While I admittedly disliked the grind, the satisfaction of a job well done and the money I earned provided significant motivation.

Building a Business, Embracing Change

Upon graduating in 1988, I secured my drywall license. This was a pivotal moment, as it allowed my parents to work for me, giving my dad the weekends off he'd missed for so many of my ball games. We focused exclusively on new construction, leaving smaller repair jobs to others. I was fortunate to lead a truly professional team. However, 1996 brought both profound challenges and immense blessings. The construction market in my area plummeted, leading to the loss of everything I had built. My parents retired that year, but it was also the year my son was born and, more significantly, the year I committed my life to Jesus Christ. Looking back, I realize I had put all my eggs in one basket – a valuable lesson learned through experience.

A New Chapter: Entrepreneurship and Purpose

For the next decade, I explored various business ventures, though drywall remained a sideline. In 2000, I purchased an RV dealership, selling it a year later to a competitor who offered me a lucrative sales manager position. I accepted and spent four years in that role. By 2004, a new calling emerged: I became an ordained minister, initially serving as a youth pastor before transitioning to Senior Pastor. Yet, my entrepreneurial spirit persisted, leading me to establish DS Drywall Patch & Repair. Unlike my previous venture, this company specializes in the smaller, often overlooked jobs – the everyday wear and tear of family life, from minor holes to damage caused by AC leaks or plumbing issues, or even drywall work for home additions. We proudly tackle the projects that larger new construction companies typically pass over.

We operate as a self-contained unit, our trucks serving as rolling warehouses stocked with everything needed for any drywall task. No power on site? No problem – we have a 9000-kW generator. No water? We've got that too. We're fully equipped with all the tools necessary to guarantee exceptional results.
